Ridgewood Times/Times Newsweekly Turns 100!

    Senator Maltese joins Councilman Anthony Como and Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan in honoring the Ridgewood Times/Times Newsweekly publication on its 100th Anniversary.

    The special Legislative Resolution honoring the occasion was passed by the State Senate and presented to Publisher Maureen Walthers.  The text of the resolution appears below:

        COMMENDING  the  Ridgewood  Times/Times Newsweekly
        upon  the  occasion   of   celebrating   its   100th
        Anniversary on August 17, 2008

  WHEREAS,  It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those  illustrious  journalistic  entities  which  have  diligently  and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and  brought  local  news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and

  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and  in  full  accord  with  its
long-standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is  justly proud to
commend the Ridgewood Times/Times Newsweekly upon the  occasion  of  its
100th  Anniversary  to  be  celebrated at an event on Sunday, August 17,
2008, at the Onderdonk House in Ridgewood, New York; and

  WHEREAS, The housing boom in  Ridgewood  began  in  1906,  with  the
decision  to extend the Myrtle Avenue elevated line at ground level from
Wyckoff Avenue to Fresh Pond and then across the fields to  Metropolitan
Avenue in Middle Village; and

  WHEREAS,  As  it became clear that a newspaper was needed to service
the needs of an ever-growing  population,  George  Schubel  founded  the
Ridgewood  Times  and its first issue, dated August 1, 1908, was printed
in both German and English; and

  WHEREAS, Throughout its distinguished history, the  Ridgewood  Times
has  been  instrumental in campaigning for many local improvements, such
as the paving of streets, construction, fire-proofing  of  schools,  and
persuading the City to provide the first free public library; and

  WHEREAS, In addition, the Ridgewood Times was a driving force in the
formation  of  the  Ridgewood  Chamber of Commerce as well as many other
organizations in the community; and

  WHEREAS, A pioneer in the field of radio broadcasting, the Ridgewood
Times established station WHN in 1921-22;  during  this  period,  George
Schubel  decided  to  devote  his  efforts to radio and relinquished his
interest in the Ridgewood Times in 1922; and

  WHEREAS,  Carl  E.  Clemens,  who  joined  the  newspaper  in  1920,
ultimately   became  president  of  the  Ridgewood  Times  Printing  and
Publishing Co. and served in this capacity until 1986,  when  he  turned
over  the  ownership  of the company to its editor, Maureen E. Walthers;
and

  WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of Maureen E. Walthers,  the
Ridgewood  Times  continued  to experience a time of growth in both news
coverage and circulation; she expanded the paper with  the  introduction
of its additional masthead as the Times Newsweekly; and

  WHEREAS, Today, Maureen E. Walthers remains as publisher and editor;
her son, John T. Walthers, is president; and


  WHEREAS,  After  100  years,  the  Ridgewood  Times/Times Newsweekly
continues to maintain a presence in Queens and Brooklyn, as  it  strives
to  build  upon its time-honored tradition of providing its readers with
the best coverage of community news, issues and events; and

  WHEREAS, Our newspapers provide a  tremendous  service  to  citizens
across  the  State  of  New  York by keeping them informed about current
events; the democracy of our State  and  Nation  is  strengthened  by  a
responsible  citizenry  which  is  actively  engaged in reading and kept
abreast of news affecting their lives; and

  WHEREAS, As the Ridgewood  Times/Times  Newsweekly  moves  into  the
future,  it  carries  with it the legacy of a distinguished journalistic
history and an  outstanding  record  of  growth  and  achievement;  now,
therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the  Ridgewood  Times/Times  Newsweekly  upon  the  occasion  of
celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  copies  of  this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted  to  Maureen  E.  Walthers,  publisher  and  editor  of  the
Ridgewood  Times/Times Newsweekly and John T. Walthers, president of the
Ridgewood Times/Times Newsweekly.
